“Upstream” exhibition by Angie Shanahan, Susanne Leutenegger and Eileen Healy

Upstream is a collective of three palettes from the Backwater Artists Group which will be exhibiting in the Mad Fish Restaurant and Cronin’s Pub, Crosshaven.

The three very different, yet complementary artists in the group showcase are Eileen Healy, Susanne Leutenegger and Angie Shanahan. The exhibition will be opened by Joachim Beug, lecturer in Art History and Katherine Boucher Beug, esteemed artist and art critic on Wednesday November 19th at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

EileenEileen Healy from Youghal, East Cork is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design and won student of the year award from the Lavitt Gallery in 1988. After a residency at The Lavit she was a studio member at The Cork Artists Collective where she began running regular life drawing sessions for artists and so began her obsession with drawing from life. She since joined Backwater Studios where she has been a member for over 10 years. A strong believer in the practice of drawing, she believes it’s this practice of working from life that keeps her work fresh and alive. She uses models as her source of inspiration.

Exhibitions include Arnotts National Portrait Award Exhibition, RHA Annual show, UCC, CIT Wandesford Gallery,Crawford Gallery. Residencies include Cill Rialaig, Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Burren Art College and Students Arts League New York. Eileen also teaches life drawing Adult Education classes at CIT Crawford College of Art.

SusanneSusanne Leutenegger was born in Switzerland and graduated in Fine Art from the Crawford College of Art in Cork in 1987. Her studio has been located at the Backwater since 2004. She also teaches “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” and is a teacher of the Feldenkrais – Awareness through Movement Method and is a founder member of  Arthaven Gallery in Crosshaven. She has widely exhibited in Switzerland, Germany (2013 in Cologne) and in Dublin at the Royal Hibernian Academy and OPW and Cork (UCC, Glucksman, Crawford Gallery, Sirius Centre Cobh, Fenton Gallery, Form Gallery, Lavit Gallery). She describes her work as “invented organic shapes which are highly charged with energy yet quiet and resolved and uses strong and instinctive drawing and bold colour. “

Place Space, Wandesford Quay Gallery; Hard Times at Cill Rialaig Project Gallery, Kerry and Urban Retreat Gallery, Dublin; the RHA Annual Exhibition 2011 and  Ciall 2011 where she received an award for painting. Her work is featured in a recent Gallery Press publication, Huts and Sheds by Derek Mahon; Representing Art in Ireland, Fenton Gallery publication, and. Art in State Buildings, 1995-2005. OPW cat. Angie also won a commission from the Office of Public Works to paint a portrait of Michael Collins for the Gallery of Taosaigh. This now hangs in Dail Eireann.

“One of my first instincts is to distil the sense and soul of the places that capture my attention, the relationship between the physical reality we see and the invisible conceptual reality harboured in the spirit of the place. The landscapes often contain man made  structures, forgotten, some in semi-dereliction subsumed back into nature temporarily”.

All three are part of the Backwater Artists Group which is located in Wandesford Quay, together with the Cork Printmakers and the Wandesford Quay Gallery. Founded in 1990 to provide studio space for visual artists in Cork city there are 28 studio spaces for varied disciplines such as painting, mixed media and sculpture.

“Deep raw soul that never goes out of fashion” – The Irish Times.

Brian Deady is one of Ireland’s finest exponents of contemporary soul.  Raised in the bohemian badlands of West Cork, he creates music that blends rich, expressive vocals with a cool, electro-groove—a sound that has drawn praise from such influential artists as Nile Rodgers and Ashley Beedle, not to mention LA’s revered radio station KCRW.

Since releasing his acclaimed album, Interview, in 2009, he has been building a reputation as a distinctive songwriter and producer.  In addition to opening for disco legends Chic at the Cork Jazz Festival, he has played with a host of major acts such as De La Soul, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam Funk and Janelle Monae. After MTV voted him ‘Best Irish Male for 2013,’ he appeared on The Late Late Show, and has also featured on some of the country’s most popular radio slots.

Deady is currently writing his second album, due for release in 2015 and in his new touring show in which he reinterprets classic hits in a fresh Doo Wop style using intricate vocals and live drums.

Ceramic and painting exhibition by Stephanie Mendel & Kira O’Brien

Artists Kira O’Brien and Stephanie Mendel are hosting an exhibition at the Mad Fish Restaurant in Cronin’s Pub, Crosshaven, Co. Cork. Opening on Wednesday, May 11th at 8pm the show is a mix of ceramics and nature based paintings.

Dublin born Kira, is based in Crosshaven, where she works from her home studio. She studied in Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork currently teaches part time adult education ceramic classes in the Be Creative Centre, Carrigaline. Her pieces are decorated in a sgraffitto, a ceramic drawing technique, where sculptural figures sit on teacups, bowls, jugs or lids. Often the figures are alone, or part of conversation with a group suggesting a story is taking place.  Kira’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including Switzerland and Montana and is held in private collections throughout the world.

Stephanie Mendel paints from a studio in her home in Myrtleville, Co. Cork. A native of New Mexico she is both intrigued and enchanted by nature, colour and texture, for which she finds her outlet in paintings of flowers, trees and other natural objects. Working primarily in acrylics and oils she brings a bright and often starkly contrasting view of her subjects, always rich in colour and deep in perspective and ambiguity. Stephanie’s artwork has been featured in a number of exhibitions and in March 2013 she presented her work, solo at the NSC Campus in Cork.
The exhibition will be open daily and runs from May 11 until June 29

“Shots from a dark light” photographic exhibition at Cronin’s Pub, Crosshaven

Photographer and marine biologist, Mick Mackey returns to Cronin’s Pub and the Mad Fish Restaurant, Crosshaven this month with his photographic exhibition and study ‘Shots from a Dark Light; 900 Days on Bird Island, South Georgia’.

This striking collection of photographs is his first solo exhibition in over 5 years and was premiered at Cork’s Vision Centre in 2013. The dramatic collection captures not only the harsh Antarctic conditions that constantly confront the animals that inhabit this vast and lonely island but also the vivid beauty of its unspoilt and untouched environment.

Mackey’s 30 month trip to the Antartic was not for the fainthearted. In winter, temperatures drop to -10C, and the small team of biologists are completely isolated from the outside world for long periods. However, this is one of the most biologically dense areas on earth; it is estimated that there is a bird or seal for every 1.5m² of the 400 hectare island.

“The unique opportunity to work closely with such an absorbing and attractive group of animals over such a long period, allowed me to collate one of the most comprehensive photographic collections ever to be made in the polar environment” says Mackey.

The photographs featured in this compelling exhibition include wandering Albatross and their chicks, Antarctic Fur Seals, Macaroni Penguins and many more of the Island’s charismatic and hardy creatures.

‘Shots from a Dark Light; 900 Days on Bird Island, South Georgia’ will open in Cronin’s Pub on Wednesday 19th March at 8pm. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition will be open to the public daily and runs until May 11th.
